MIAMI HORROR’S BENJAMIN PLANT TALKS ILLUMINATION
September 1, 2010 – 5:11 pm | No Comment

They took over our festival stages and radio airways remixing our favourite tracks of the moment, making them just that little bit cooler. Quite a strategic move, on their behalf, because in a few months Miami Horror were killing it in their own right, releasing big-name tracks like Sometimes and Make You Mine. After producing the ‘Bravado’ EP, we waited – and waited – for their full-length album. Indeed, on August 20, after a tour for an album we didn’t know was coming and two new singles, they released ‘Illumination’; relying on their trademarks of synth, disco and dance while mixing in a new mature live band sound. Producer Benjamin Plant tells how Miami Horror are striving for originality as they head to America for the first time to try their luck on the world stage, for a change.

Congratulations on finally having an album out there! How does it feel?

Obviously, we’ve been working on it a long time and we had a lot of long days over the past two years. Looking back it was a little bit, you know, there’s always ups and downs, but listening to it now we’re pretty happy with it…. Waiting to see how it goes.

Not long ago you said ‘Illumination’ feels like “a sequel to the first album that never happened”. How so?

Because I kind of threw away a lot of the songs that were originally going to be on the album… So for example, if we had of released this two years ago it would have been totally different – a lot more dancier. I think its good that we held off and developed a more original sound.

You started off with your EP ‘Bravado’. Why did you wait this long to unleash your music through a full-length album?

[We were] trying to really do it as good (as ‘Bravado’) so it just happened to take this long. We had an album planned before the EP even, so the EP was just a chance to set up some form of reputation while the album was being made.

‘Illumination’ includes songs you wrote when you were 18 (‘Moon Theory’). Most of us would say our taste has changed dramatically since we were 18; why have these ones stuck with you and can you tell us which ones they are?

Well I always felt really positive about the elements of ‘Moon Theory’ and the overall sound, so it was a case of modifying it a bit and keeping it up-to-date and keeping it modern but it actually … always had disco octave base line, those chords and quite a few of the sounds in there so it just happened to coincidentally be quite relative to now.

You’ve recruited a few guest stars for this album like Neon Indian. You seem to produce great stuff as part of a partnership. Why is that?

I don’t know, we just have a very similar taste in music and we’ve been working together for quite a few years it seems to be our case… We like the same amount of originality in music, we’re very similar on that level.

What do you think are the standouts for the album?

My personal favourite is ‘Echoplex’. We also like ‘Soft Light’ and ‘I Look To You’.

In prep for your album release you recently played Splendour in the Grass – which was the best weekend of my life – how was it for you?

It was the best weekend of our lives too. It was just an amazing layout, backstage services; we had everything you wanted in our camper van. It was like luxury for us instead of camping. Yeah, it was three days of the best lineup that existed in Australian history pretty much. Everything just lined up.

I’ve been lucky enough to see Miami Horror at a few different gigs, but I must say my all-time favourite was Good Vibes 2009 where you guys played in a small but intense tent to a very excited crowd. Do you have a favourite gig, venue or festival to play?

Well, we are more into some of the newer gigs we’re playing stuff off the album. Of course, some people might not get as excited because stuff isn’t as upbeat or dancy, but it depends on what they like. So I would say Splendour in the Grass overall was pretty good – our set wasn’t that good – but between that and Falls Festival.

Tell us about the Moon Theory tour…

Yeah we just did it for that one month (June, 2010). It was actually going to be the album tour but we weren’t allowed to announce that until we knew the album was going to be out, but we didn’t so it wasn’t. We sold out nearly every venue that we played but the best bit was probably selling out Melbourne’s Corner Hotel, which was like 1600 people.

Today my sister and I were talking about how fans have come to love you in the past couple of years, but we know you have been slaving away at your craft for years now. She said, “It’s been an overnight success but it’s been a bloody long night”. Do you agree with that?

Yeah, definitely. I mean its self-explanatory; it’s taken so long to get out yet it’s kind of all happened within a two year period.

Miami Horror has been described as “psychadelic indie electronic adventurers”. How would you describe your sound?

Something like that. It’s disco influenced, it’s psychadelic influenced – the new album anyway. But overall, its probably more inspired by a lot of different nostalgic pop, 70s pop including the Jackson 5, The Holidays and lots of Supertramp and a little bit of Pink Floyd.

On the other hand, you weren’t too happy being stereotyped as an electro-only act and have added a “live band” element to your sound. What reaction do you expect from your fans?

I don’t know, we’ve always been moving towards… We’ve obviously had the band for two years now so that whole electro thing has been in question for while… We’re just happy to have finally caught up.

You were previously well known for your remixes, being approached by big names like Pnau and The Presets. Will you continue with this one day or are you happy with the new path you’ve taken?

Another few remixes here and there in the future – we’ve got some parts to a Gorillaz song but I’m not sure if we’ll have time to put it together.

You must be excited to go to America for the first time as a band in September. What are your plans?

Well we’re doing 15 days in total: three in South America and 12 in North America. We’re pretty excited about the three in South America just for being so culturally quite different. Then we move on and do all the major cities in America including LA, Chicago, New York, Washington, San Francisco, Vegas. We’ve got a lot of spare time so hopefully we have a great time more than anything.

One for the kids – what’s on your iPod?

We’re listening to the Tame Impala album a lot. Then I’m getting into a lot of older stuff like The Beatles which the rest of the band have always been into but I’d kind of closed my mind to a little bit. And a little bit of new disco.
