Laneway Festival: Girl Talk (Gregg Gillis) and No Age’s Randy Randall
Greg Gillis (Girl Talk) receives an impromptu interview from the “loosey goosey” guitarist from No Age, Randy Randall. My Vision let the cameras roll as Randy interviews the famous ‘laptop musician’ (NOT A DJ, as his t-shirt clearly stated on the day) and Greg gives My Vision a little cheek about the irony of placing a Marshall amplifier behind him for the interview.
It was nearing the end of the day at The Laneway Festival in Brisbane, when I look down and realise that I have a voicemail on my iPhone (for anyone playing at home, I strongly advise not purchasing one!). Panicked, I realise that the missed call is probably from Girl Talk’s manager, trying to pinpoint where we are within the crazy festival so that we can conduct our interview.
“Hey Sarah, it’s Claire. We’ve just arrived on site. Greg and I are floating around the main backstage area, so if you could give me a call back that would be fantastic. Thanks.”
We’d just finished conducting interview with Cut Off Your Hands and The John Steel Singers at this time, and everyone in the My Vision crew is looking a little lobster-esque to say the least. It was only that morning that Adam and I were cranking Feed The Animals in the car as we drove up to festival, getting into The Laneway spirit. Greg Gillis was certainly a prominant musical figure, and the headlining act for the festival, so of course it was important that everything went smoothly. No pressure.
When we caught up with Greg later that afternoon, the humble Pittsburg musician greeted the My Vision crew with a bit of a sniffle accompanied with a smile. A few hours earlier we were told that the interview may not go ahead due to how Greg was feeling. Delighted that he pulled through for us, we began to talk through the interview proceedure and and sit him in front of the camera. Adam and I were even discussing which questions would best suit oour small time frame, when all of a sudden…
Randy Randall of No Age, plastered as he was, jumps in front of the camera and steals the microphone! At first we freak out a little, worried that our Girl Talk interview time may be cut short chasing a tipsy guitarist to get our gear back. Instead, we went with the flow and this video was the result.
Greg proceded to put on one of the greatest gigs I’ve ever experienced that night. The My Vision team were lucky enough to dance up on stage in front of thousands, sweating like footballers, and enjoying the mashups and crazy moves produced by the man who was almost “too sick to interview.”
Pfffft.
