Laneway Festival: The John Steel Singers
My Vision TV had the chance to catch up with the lads at this year’s Brisbane Laneway Festival. Click the image for the whole interview: Life on the road, what they thought of the festival, murder and potatoes…
A chance meeting between two Smashing Pumpkins-loving waiters, an abandoned tin horse and an appreciation of the ‘trombong’ were all seminal factors in the formation of Brisbane’s six-piece sunny pop outfit The John Steel Singers. Armed with glockenspiels, trombones, banjos, xylophones and more, the band belts out some very accomplished woo-hoo-hoo-do-wopping harmonies fit for a backyard on a sunny afternoon.
Influenced by bands like The Beach Boys, The Beatles and The Kinks, The John Steel Singers have a distinct sixties flavour to their music which has helped them score spots at the Big Day Out, Falls Festival, Southbound, Playground Weekender, Was I There In Your Future?, Come Together and most recently, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival. They’ve also toured with The Polyphonic Spree, The Grates, The Panics, Yves Klein Blue, Built to Spill and The Brunettes. Since 2007 they have released two EPs and last year brought out a Mini LP entitled ‘The Beagle and the Dove’. We can expect a debut album from these guys mid-year as well as a national and UK tour.

One of the better Bris bands doing the round at the moment, their sound is so distinctive and everyone should catch them!
