My Vision TV Exclusive: Reggie Watts
For anyone who missed the Reggie Watts performance at The Brisbane Powerhouse, you missed a night of laughs and astonishment. One man. One loop station. Over ten octaves of vocal agility. Wow. Reggie has a wide-ranged chat with My Vision before entertaining his unprepared Brisbane audience.
There’s no doubt that Reggie has talent. Of course he’ll never be in the ARIA countdown, and there will be many an Australian who would skip past this kind of talent without batting an eyelid (”Where’s the glam? Where’s the guitar?”) but there’s got to be a degree of co-ordination and vocal ability to master that lethal combination with a loop station. On top of this, Reggie aims to make his audience laugh, which he likes to do by targeting terrible music faux pas and cultural ironies.
You’re bound to have an interesting outlook on life’s categorisations when you’re born in Germany, son to a French mother and African- American father. Reggie has been touring and a part of the Seattle Music scene throughout the 90’s and to the present. He has made appearances at the SXSW festival, The Montreal Comedy Festival, The Fuse Box festival in Austin and several BBC live radio events to name a few. This year, Reggie has even been selected to play at Luminous in June at The Sydney Opera House; a festival curated by the incredible Brian Eno.
So keep your eyes on this one or, more importantly, seek him out. Because he is a gem, and a live act not to be missed.
