Katy Perry vs Calvin Harris?

Submitted by admin on April 10, 2009 – 4:02 pmNo Comment

Katy Perry and Calvin Harris. One of the sexiest duets in music? Possibly. Very possibly.

American singer-songwriter Katy Perry stormed onto the music scene in 2007 after Madonna gave her a massive heads up, calling the single ‘Ur So Gay’ one of her favourite songs. Shortly afterwards, Perry’s ‘I Kissed a Girl’ was released and, despite mixed views over the song’s message, it achieved number one status in more than twenty countries.

Calvin Harris appeared at roughly the same time in the dance and electronic genre. After he captivated Britain with his suitably named debut album ‘I Created Disco’, Harris supported Faithless and Groove Armada on a UK tour, and quickly made a name for himself. Last year, however, was when he really proved his worth; UK rapper Dizzee Rascal collaborated with Harris on the song ‘Dance Wiv Me’, and though the talented two knew it was good, they didn’t realise just how good. ‘Dance Wiv Me’ reached the UK number one spot based solely on downloads, and remained immovable for a month. The single also made it to number 13 on the Australian chart and sold over 400,000 copies in less than six months.

Both artists know how to create waves in the tabloids, but even better; they know how to create good music. While a collaboration between Katy Perry and Calvin Harris isn’t official just yet, if the two do decide to go ahead and make some music together, the only possible outcome could be breath taking. Surely Harris’ ability to produce sensational, electrifying dance tracks and Perry’s superb lyrical skills could only combine to create one of the most brilliant records to date. Katy Perry’s breakthrough debut album ‘One of the Boys’ was filled with tracks penned by the star herself, showing that she isn’t just a pretty face. Similarly, Calvin Harris’ album was completely his own creation. The recording and producing process is known to have taken place at home on his own computer system, and ‘I Created Disco’ reached number 8 in the UK album chart in 2007.

Harris really is an object of talent, and at the mere age of 25 he still has enormous potential to become an astounding music producer. He has already collaborated with Kylie Minogue on her 2007 ‘X’ album and is set to work with fellow Brit Sophie Ellis-Bextor on her latest record. In the past, Harris has worked his magic with covers of Jamiroquai’s ‘Stillness in Time’ and All Saints’ ‘Rock Steady’. Put simply enough, Calvin Harris knows what he’s doing, and let’s be honest; if the man can bring back disco, just imagine what he can do with Katy Perry.
