Bertie Blackman features on iTunes
Indie kids get excited. From April 14, Bertie Blackman’s single ‘Heart’ will be featured as single of the week on iTunes.
This gem of a track is the first single to be released from her upcoming third album, ‘Secrets & Lies’.
Featuring a successful exploration into the electronic world, this track exhibits some depth through an infusion of tribal-beats, acid motown and hard-hitting lyrics delivered with a sharpness and clarity that is hard to come by.
‘Heart’ has already proven itself as a favourite amongst Aussie audiences, being the 4th most added single at radio in its first week, and featuring as the most played track on Triple J for the past two weeks.
As the wonderful Zan Rowe said:
“I love how Bertie has always towed the line between sharp rock n roll and a honey sweet vocal style. It’s cute, but it’s got balls too. And her new single is polished and pretty, with tidy electronic beat elements and a handful of Motown thrown in for good measure. It’s catchy, and will only get catchier.’
In ‘Secrets & Lies’ Blackman has moved away from the guitar-based, band orientated sound of her first two albums and shifted to a darker, electronic realm, although it still maintains a pop vibe thanks to the dominate use of keyboard,
Working with producers like Lee Groves (Goldfrapp, Gwen Stefani) and Francois Tetaz (Gotye, Architecture In Helsinki) it’s no wonder the album has turned out like it did.
As Kathy McCabe from the Daily Telegraph put it:
“Just as it seemed 2009 would be bereft of anything shockingly original, Blackman saves our sonic day. Even after the 17th airing of the Sydney songwriter’s jaw dropping new single, it’s brilliance leaves you reeling. The verses recall Bjork’s minimalist beat and melody mastery before giving way to infectiously joyous 60’s pop. But the lyrics are oh-so-dark and existential’
And we won’t have to wait too long for more audio ecstasy – ‘Secrets & Lies’ is due for release on May 8.
But to keep your ear hairs satisfied until then, make sure you head along to iTunes and get your free download of ‘Heart’.
