Lily Allen “It’s Not Me, It’s You”

Lily Allen “It’s Not Me, It’s You
3.5/5

When I knew of Lily Allen’s ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ second album release I had to own it. When I first heard it - I have to admit -I was rather disappointed. My advice is: be unprepared! Do not expect the fresh brazen sound of her debut ‘Alright Still’.

Softer vocals and strange retro sound effects such as twinkling electric pianos and peppy hypnotic sirens are what to expect in the new album. Meanwhile, the blameworthiness title Its Not Me, Its You is comforting – the new Lily still has her action-packed attitude.

The hit song ‘The Fear’ mimes the egotistical superficial needs of people; ‘lots of money…fast cars…movie stars’ and ‘f**** loads of diamonds’. The casual tone, carefree sarcasm and elegant swear-words reels us in for more. Her parodies on society are also found in ‘Everyone’s At It’, and ‘F*** You’ – a song dedicated to George W. Bush.

Not Fair’ is about a lover, whom in Lily’s case can ‘never make me scream’.  The downfall of the song is the faux old-western music that does not match the lyrics. However, her daring humorous style distracts the dodgy musical theme.

There are a few awkward lyrics in the album and Lily’s famous cockney accent is not as strong as it once was.  This does not mean it lacks the originality and eccentricity that puts her in the spot light. Although it’s a change, the new electro-pop album is definitely full of charm, variety and surprises.
