Bluejuice - ‘Head of the Hawk’
Bluejuice - Head Of The Hawk
If you haven’t got ‘Bluejuice’ pumping through your veins right now, your not alive. Blast their new record ‘Head of the Hawk’ outta your stereo, fill those lungs with air and get involved with these purple tracksuit-wearing skeletons.
This electro-pop dance group has been variously described as ‘punk-hop’, ‘ska-tinged pop’ and ‘pounding disco’. Ahhh what? I hear you say as you furrow your brow and ask me in confusion to explain these new sub-genres. Well actually, I have no clue and frankly don’t care. Just listen to their whacky beats and make up your own category – I guarantee it will be just as strange. The only helpful words I have to describe their ‘too straight for funk, too groovy for indie and too sweaty for pop’ musical style is CHAOTIC.
These maniacs hail from Sydney town and are signed with the Australian record label Dew Process. Their latest single ‘Ain’t Telling the Truth’ has become rather popular on the J’s and successfully delivers catchy dance lyrics that make you want to jump. And jump I did. I have been lucky enough to witness their high-spirited and cheerful energy twice. My first taste was at Splendour in the Grass, which left my mouth watering for more, and so I jumped aboard their side show at Coolangatta in August. It was here they rocked out with skipping ropes, danced like crazy people amongst the crowd and rubbed their two-time ARIA award nomination in our faces.
Their most recent record is full of melody, harmony and dance party lyrics. From their first track, ‘Head of the Hawk’ the pace has been set, and standards are flying high. While your wondering how the rest of the album will manage to top this extreme heart starting song, a whirlwind of get-up-and-go-go force repels your body into dance moves you never thought possible. Come the end of the album, your body gives away, dancing shoes are loosened and skipping ropes put down. It has been one hell of a journey into the insanely incredible world of ‘Bluejuice’, and one that you will frequently visit.
And it just keeps getting better! Their recent album includes one of the best video clips of 2009, ‘Broken Leg’. A heavy synth with 80’s influenced guitar riffs and fun vibes screaming from the lyrics not only makes this song sound bliss, but their video clip priceless. Here we see the band take part in a skipping championship – possibly one of the most hilarious and well-crafted dance routines I have seen in a long time.
The five-star group have recently been nominated in FBi Radio’s SMAC Awards for Best Live Act and Best Sydney Song and after watching them perform live, it’s easy to see why. So if you’re into legless and loose times, listen to these guys. But prepare yourself…. You will lose your juices over the singer Jake Stone, you will dance like an absolute ass and you will most likely end up with a ‘Broken Leg’.
