Sundance Kids - Neverland, Gold Coast

Submitted by admin on March 19, 2010 – 3:06 pmOne Comment

In all honesty, I hadn’t heard of the Sundance Kids until about a week before the gig when I received the event invite on Facebook.

Originally I had no intention of attending but after this they started popping out at me from every which way. From stumbling across a YouTube video of “Burn So Bright” (the third single off their debut album – “Fall into Place”), to seeing them perform live on Sunrise, I decided, why not!?

Any band whose catchy pop-rock tunes have me bopping along and attempting to sing lyrics I’m hearing for the first time, has gotta be worth supporting. And these five boys from Adelaide didn’t disappoint.

I was a little apprehensive of how the gig would go down, but as soon as Ash Gale, lead singer, beckoned the crowd to the front of the venue, the charisma and enthusiasm emanating from the boys totally won me over. Not to mention Ash’s beautifully infectious smile and his dorky, but still funny, jokes throughout the gig.

My favourite was “Hey guys, this is our second time in Coolangatta! We think it’s really cool…. In the gatta!” Queue groans, but you couldn’t help but laugh along with him.

Every song they played sounded amazing, and though the crowd was small (perhaps due to the last minute change of date - they were originally playing Neverland on Wednesday, not Tuesday) every single person in front of the stage was dancing and singing along.

There was one guy in particular, right up the front, who recorded pretty much the whole gig on his digital camera while jumping up and down – now that’s dedication.

The band’s style of pop-rock is slightly generic, but totally catchy, and being part of a performance where every single band member is obviously doing what they love, and to see passion they have, is inspiring.

It was so refreshing and fun to go and see a gig at a small, personal venue and to feel involved in the performance. Ash even came out on the dance floor and was boogieing down and singing along with three girls in the crowd at one point.

Incredibly this comes from a guy who has confessed to originally wanting to be on drums because he “never felt confidant enough”. It definitely didn’t show because he looked so at ease on stage and his voice was simply stunning.

Highlight songs of the night? “Burn So Bright”, “Drive Away” and “Solutions “– fully recommend everyone reading this to look these songs up on YouTube, or better yet pop along to one of their gigs.

The band is touring around Australia until the end of April, so if the chance to see a gig where five boys pour their heart and soul into their music is your thing, then you better get involved.
